Eat Local!
Here at American Green Holdings our passions extend beyond alternative energy. We are all about self -reliance and making this world a greener place to live. So with that in mind we would like to bring to you new ideas to challenge you and those around you.
I’m sure by now the concept of eating locally is not a new subject for you. So the next question is why aren’t more of us using it? The concept of your community providing you with farm raised products such as grass raised beef, and free-range chicken and eggs, has to be more appealing than the mass marketed, over-medicated, super-sized chickens and beef.
Don’t think these issues affect you? You wouldn’t encourage someone you care for to start taking steroids, unnecessary hormones or over-medicating, would you?
Now there are certain things altered by “cause and effect”.
If a farmer raises beef in mass quantities at an abnormal rate, more than likely they are substituting quality for quantity. (Hence the steroids in meat) What happens to those steroids once the animal has been butchered and processed? Well, obviously, nothing. They are still there, to be consumed by every meat-eating grocer. Now in turn, the effects the steroids had on the cattle, is now passed on to the consumer to reap the benefits.
Not to mention meat bought in the store comes from cows fed tons and tons of grain. The reasoning behind this is to fatten the cow up, in order to get more bang for their buck.
This high-fiber diet unveils a whole new plethora of problems. For instance Omega 6 (the cancer-causing fat we get too much of) comes from these farm-raised, grain-fed cattle, while the Omega 3 (the cancer fighting fat that we need more of) comes from cattle fed strictly grass. It would be the difference between you eating carbohydrates all day, compared to fruits and veggies.
I know with our dollar bouncing around the bottom of the barrel, price is definitely an issue, but so are the long-lasting effects caused by these killer ingredients.
Bottom line you are what you eat, and when you eat something that eats something unhealthy, you are what they eat. Not much control… eh?
Ask your doctor, and you’ll hear what you already know. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
There are many local farmers around the state, that you probably didn’t know exist, who focuses on these theories, and try to provide you with the healthiest alternatives. To find one in your area go to www.localharvest.org and live up to the challenge of a healthier more local life style.
